- UPS Monitor 1.1
- written by Yair Elharrar, April 1993

-
- UPS Monitor is a small hack, used to determine the status of a
- serial-connected UPS. Many UPSes come with a DB-9 serial port, which serves
- as a status line. I used a DB-9 to DB-25 converter cable and the standard
- Apple MiniDIN-8 to DB-25 cable to connect it to the Mac.
- UPS Monitor works with the modem port alone.
-
- UPS Monitor sends status requests to the UPS, notifies you if the system is
- on battery power, and shuts down your Mac automatically after a specified
- period of time. You can disable the automatic shutdown or the battery alert,
- and change the status request rate (default is one every 5 seconds).
-
- After connecting the UPS to your modem port, run UPS Monitor and choose
- "Configure" from the menu. Configure it according to your needs and click
- OK. Put UPS Monitor in your "Startup Items" folder in the System Folder.
-
- Suggested configuration: 2400 baud, automatic shutdown after 10 minutes,
- 5 seconds scan interval. I suggest turning the alert off on unattended
- Macs (e.g. dedicated file servers) since the alert waits for you to click
- OK before the automatic shutdown.
-
-
- UPS Monitor has been tested on a Mac SE with System 6.0.7, a Classic II and
- a IIci, both running System 7.1.

- Changes since version 1.0
- -------------------------
-
- * Fixed a bug that caused UPS Monitor to refuse to quit when shutting down
- or restarting.
- * Added AppleEvent support (tried killing it from ShortFinder 1.0 and it
- worked).
- * Changed the menu title to "File" instead of "Monitor" to help system 6
- users quit UPS Monitor automatically.
